Using the Facebook iPhone Interface without an iPhone
Wed, 08/15/2007 - 14:50
As reported on TechCrunch and Mashable, Facebook just released an iPhone version of the site today. I'm impressed, the user interface is clean and very slick. I don't have an iPhone and don't plan on getting one any time soon so I will probably never experience the full benefits of this interface, but why not use this site in your normal browser? If you are sick of the advertisements, applications, and junk on Facebook nowadays, why not just use this iPhone interface? It's simple, has no advertising, and no applications. Obviously you will have to sign into the full Facebook site if you need to use some of the more advanced features, but the majority of my time is spent checking my news feed and inbox which I can do very comfortably here. I wonder if Facebook will start limiting this service to only work on the iPhone's Safari browser to stop people like me, but in the mean time I will be enjoying my ad free Facebook. Comments

Although I don't have an iPhone, I do have a UMPC. What I have done is load up the Safari 3 Beta browser for Windows and browse iPhone specific sites in portrait mode. It works like a dream and really has improved my browsing experience on my Samsung Q1! Thanks Apple, your iPhone has inadvertantly revived the UMPC market!

That's a great idea Ray. I think Apple would be smart to open up a better API into the iPhone rather than just telling us to build web applications with the Safari browser. This would let people design applications specifically for the iPhone that probably won't work very well on competing devices.

Well Safari Isnt really an SDK at all. Its only recomended by apple to test your application. The Iphone uses Safari web browser so its only prudent to test your app in Safari. But in reality most any DHTML app should work. The iphone has some quirks cause some metaphors just dont exist in the iphone world. Post new comment |
